Meditation helps to reduce the stress response without impairing alertness, concentration or memory. Recent studies have shown that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques are quite effective in relieving stress and shown significant decrease in stress levels and thus cortisol hormone levels. Meditation also improves quality of life by improved functions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal or HPA axis.
