Helicobacter pylori commonly known as H. pylori, is a spiral shaped bacteria that causes chronic inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach and duodenum in humans. More than 60% of the world’s population harbor H. pylori in their upper gastrointestinal tract. This bacterium also is considered a common cause of ulcers worldwide ( 90% of people with ulcers are infected with H. pylori). Interestingly, many people who have these organisms residing (colonizing) in their stomach and upper part of digestive tract ; have fewer or no symptoms. H. pylori infection may not cause any symptoms for long but if symptoms do appear there will be nausea, heartburn or severe pain in the abdomen, bloating and burping is present in most of the cases as well.
Individuals with H. pylori may experience severe symptoms and conditions such as peptic ulcers, stomach lining inflammation and increased risk of stomach cancer. H. pylori was first discovered in the stomach of patients with gastritis and ulcers by Drs. Barry Marshall and Robin Warren of Perth, Australia n 1982 At the time, the conventional thinking was that no bacterium could live in the acid environment of the human stomach. In recognition of their wonderful work, Marshall and Warren were awarded Nobel Prize in Physiology in the Year 2005.
H.pylori infection is usually spread from one person to another through direct contact. It may also spread by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food.
