What is muscular dystrophy disease?

The muscular dystrophy or atrophy is a hereditary disease that causes degeneration in the muscles resulting in lack of activity, this condition result in loss of  power in the muscles that leads to the reduction of their size and loss of strength in them. Muscular dystrophy usually  occur in childhood or may be at middle age in some cases.

Other causes of muscular dystrophy:

  • The disease can be due to an injury,  the lack of activity in the muscle leads to the forced paralysis
  • Muscular atrophy from plaster from broken bones.
  • Prolonged periods of rest can cause diseases that paralyze certain joints.
  • Other times the cause of this problem is nervous, due to lack of electrical stimulation and activity in the affected muscle.

The most common symptoms in muscular dystrophy are:

  • Decrease in muscle mass
  • Lack of strength
  • Muscular paralysis
  • Muscle pain
  • Loss of ability to walk

Ayurvedic prospective of muscular dystrophy:

According to Ayurvedic medicine, muscular dystrophy occurs  due to an imbalance in the 3 humors with  predominance of Kapha and Vata imbalance. There is obstruction to the flow of vata due to the aggrevation of kapha dosha.  Ayurveda accepts the fear of change, anger, stress  among other causes.

Ayurvedic treatments of muscular dystrophy:

Ayurvedic panchkarma (Abhyangam, Vasti) and rejuvenation therapies are quite beneficial in management of muscular dystrophy. Vata and Kapha balancing herbs provide additional benefits in management of this disease.

Some herbs and herbal combinations:
Ginger: can be used in compresses or as massage oil, this product has anti-inflammatory, analgesic properties and is a great stimulant for muscles atrophied by the disease.
Guggulu: It is an anti-inflammatory. It is considered as one of the best herbs for reducing ama in tissues of the body. It is considered excellent in the treatment of muscular dystrophy.
Guduchi: This herb is usually added to preparations with guggul in the treatment of imbalance of Vata. It has many uses; it is a good anti-inflammatory and analgesic in the treatment of this disease

Dhanwantharam Thailam: This is Ayurvedic oil that has been designed to treat joint pain due to excess of Vata in a person’s body. The conditions that this oil can help relieve are rheumatoid and muscular dystrophy, spondylitis, headache conditions and neuromuscular. The oil is made with a combination of herbs such as Balamoola, Yava, Kola, and Kulatha and can be used on a daily basis.
